“The not so hidden injuries of class denied”

Wednesday 10th February 2010
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Prof David Byrne, SASS, Durham University, will be presenting “The not so hidden injuries of class denied” on Wednesday 10 February 2010 from 2.30-4pm in Room 010, Geography Department.

In this seminar, Pr Byrne will discuss the implications of the ways in which the kind of class identity associated with coal mining has been assaulted both by the experience of deindustrialisation and by negative representations of it subsequent to that process.

The focus will be on specific cultural forms and what results from the disintegration of the material basis of those cultural forms.

Injuries are discussed in the sense employed by Sennett and Cobb - that is destruction of self-worth which has considerable implications for wellbeing and/or health.
