MARG talk: The William Harvey Project
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
The Department of Anthropology’s Medical Anthropology Research Group presents a talk by Dr Sarah J Pearce, Consultant Physician and Hon Senior Lecturer of University Hospital of North Durham, on The William Harvey Project: The NHS works with schools to raise aspirations in health care sciences on Wednesday 10 February at 12 noon.
Educational attainment is inversely related to socio-economic status. The achievement gap widens as children progress through the system. Take up of science options is particularly poor and difficulties are compounded by lack of relevant science based work experience in deprived areas.
The interaction of these factors is examined in some detail in an area of socio-economic deprivation.
High attainment in sciences is usually considered a core requirement for acceptance into medicine and widening access to medicine for school leavers is therefore very difficult in these circumstances.
A partnership between hospitals and local schools, including science-based work placements, is described and benefit is demonstrated in GCSE results.
Co-operation between the NHS and schools by provision of work experience and teaching materials could help to address the above issues as well as likely staffing difficulties in other healthcare science careers in the future. Expenditure can be justified to the NHS on the grounds of known links between health, education and employment.
The talk takes place in the Anthropology Seminar Room, Dawson Building, Room 104, from 12pm to 1.30pm.
